Why Gerard Kennedy Should Be Leader: Number Two

Gerard Kennedy For Liberal Leader: Reason 2

He will change the Liberal Party.

Gerard Kennedy offers a unique perspective. He has worked in provincial politics for years and was a Provincial Cabinet Minister. Gerard ran for Ontario Liberal Leader and lost on the fifth ballot. In such a close race, the Ontario Liberals remained united, due to the fact of Gerard's ability to unite. Such a feature is drastically needed in the Liberal Party, to change it from the factioning Party of the past to the united front of the future; Gerard Kennedy is needed.

Gerard brings his an innovative approach to governing as well as the Liberal Party, a system based on results. If the Liberal Party isn't working then it has to change. He brought this approach to the ministry of Education in ontario and streamlined and revolutionized the department; making record results and achieving contracts thought to be unnegotiable.

Change is needed within the Liberal party and not superficial change, not a change of faces but a change in methods. Gerard Kennedy is supported by us, by the real Liberals. He isn't supported from old gaurd members from his experience in the Federal Liberal Party like certain candidates. Because he has been underated, called the under-dog, the dark horse, because he is from provincial politics, Gerard Kennedy is guarenteed to be unattached with the old way of doing things. Gerard Kennedy will bring the Liberal Party back into being liberal.

It is evident that Gerard represents change, even generational change. The youth have galvanized around Gerard Kennedy. I myself as a youth see Gerard as someone to shake up the party and make this a party of the 21st Century. Gerard knows the importance of youth and has provided us with a voice at generation kennedy. Where other candidates subjecate or ignore the youth Gerard has given them a crucial role, as the future of the Liberal Party.

Kennedy also offers a substantive change in how the Liberal Party will operate in office. The leader will be more responsible to the cabinet, thus decreasing the more Prime Ministerial dominated cabinets that have plagued previous governments. This change gives greater representation to the regions the cabinet ministers represent, and would have proved invaluable in response to the highly charged NEP under Trudeau.

The change Gerard offers, is not mere talk, he brings generational change that is unequivical with the other candidates. He brings change for a generation.

Gerard Kennedy will change the Liberal Party, he will Change Canada.

How will he change Canada?

He'll change Canada in a variety of ways. I already mentioned his responsible cabinet policy making the leader more responsible to the cabinet. That policy, since cabinets are mostly regionaly if not provincially, representitive that would add an intragovernmental facet and lessen the demand for a regionally elected senate and thus protecting Canadian federalism as we know it.

Gerard would also change Canada in a way that most (perhaps most often left) politicians don't focus on, and that is changing the bureaucracy of Canada modus operandi. Such a change would be towards a more efficient system that is based on results rather then unclarified political targets. A specific example is the streamlined operation of the Education Ministry under Gerard Kennedy in Ontario.

There are other fundamental changes, such as Canada's outlook in foreign affairs. I would pose that Gerard Kennedy would only contribute to international forces when there is a greater scrutiny in the processes of evaluating the effectiveness of the missions. This would require a renegotiation of the NATO mandate or a change within NATO's procedures, which is completely possible and the more likely of the two.

There are other reasons, but one that sticks out for me is his "roll up your sleeves and do it" spirit (and yes that is a cliched Kennedy phrase, well that is if you've read everything on the Kennedy website). But I've met Gerard Kennedy many times and that is exactly how he is. One of my first meetings I remembered asking him questions like "Are you running with a second-election strategy?" "People say you have no fire..."

Now, I am a BC Youth Co-chair and at our campaign launch Gerard told us and the crowd in front of the stage, that he wants youth chairs like myself and the BC chairs because we ask tough questions. He doesn't want to lead people who don't want what he wants. He doesn't want to lead the blind. He said we are the future, and the future can't be a mere repeat of the past. It is this want of competition, this want of a challenge that is that spirit I referred to.
